What I’ve Been Rocking.

Lately I have been on a big indy/folk kick.  I have been discovering new music everyday some of which I am digging thouroughly.  I already did my post about Priscilla Ahn so I won’t got into that too much but there is still some too mention.

Fleet Foxes – Very Indy/Folk band with traditional sensibilities.  Very relaxed laid back kind of feel  Playing with classic harmonies and acoustic sounds.  Hailing from my local lands of Washington but carry none of the dampness.  They have a bouncy feel that bleeds a back country vibe, with a contemporary tone that doesn’t make you feel hick.  The lyrics have a very lifelike resonence that allows you to reflect and personalize yourself with the music.  Many tracks can hold a spot in your life.

Spoon – Definate Pop/Indy here that doesn’t try to be different.  They are pinned to a pop tone that fits them well.  I would say my one issue is they scream scenster a little too much.  I can tell they had there fifteen minutes of fame a while ago then people like me discovered them and they became old news.  Very good background music though.  Put them on in the background and do whatever you gotta do.  I wouldn’t say it is something that requires enveloping yourself in.  Just enjoy the familiar sound.

Iron & Wine – I would place Iron & Wine under life changing music for me.  We are back to the Indy/Folk realm with a very acoustic tone but vocals that seem to blend with the instruments very remeniscent of Simon & Garfunkel or Crosby, Stills & Nash.  The music is absorbed in a naturaland at times a tribal feel that echoes.  Lyrics are more poetry than anything.  They are something that requires deciphering to understand but you almost know what ever they are trying to say has some kind of beauty in it.  This is the kind of music I almost can’t listen to while I write because I get distracted.  Sit back and listen.  Let it become a part of your enviroment and alter your moods.  It is capable of doing that.  It is weird and a little hippie of me to say this, but I think my mood changes a little bit everytime I listen to this.  Pick up “A Shepard’s Dog” for your introductory album.

Wolf Parade – Almost reeking of Indy I was pretty hesitant of this band.  I almost wrote them of the instant I heard the vocals.  Bleeding with that fluctuating vocal that is almost trying to be weird, I can become irritated to easily.  I think the music saved them long enough for me to see the purpose the vocals serve.  They float through oscillating sounds that while rise and fall constantly.

Black Keys – This band managed to bring light to my clouded eyes.  I was always very anti-indy.  I always thought they were boarder line emo music and I just couldn’t deal with it.  I seemd like being an indy band was school and graduation ment you turn emo.  Not the case by any meens.  Black Keys have full sound that makes you want to listen to them.  The bluesy vocals make you feel like you are listening to something important.  They carry themselves to your lap and say,”Hey you.  Listen to me”.  With music backing it that is always doing something.  You have heavy rhythms that carry everything along for the ride to it’s destination.  This all allows for a pretty relaxed listening session that you can just enjoy the music.

My highly medicated self is thinking it should get itself to bed.  I think I just saw inside my monitor to a little room that stuff was trying to get out of.  Did I ever mention how bad ass Ambien is.
