“A physical cassette tape in your hands has such an insistent aesthetic; just holding one makes you want to find a tape player to fulfill its destiny.”

- Justin Ouellette, founder of Muxtape.com

If you don’t about Muxtape, you should. Here is a short-ass summery courtesy of Wikipedia:

Muxtape is a website that allowed users to upload playlists of MP3s, based on the idea of a mixtape. It was created by Justin Ouellette in March 2008. Initial funding of $95,000 for the site was provided by Jakob Lodwick, Justin’s ex-Boss from Vimeo.com, and funding was agreed to via a contract written on a napkin.

Ouellette came up with the idea after being a disc jockey at his university’s radio station. The site became unexpectedly popular within two days of its launch. In April, Ouellette estimated the number of users as “ostensibly … more than the population of Germany, less than the population of Japan”, however this fact is not supported by any third party traffic estimates, which show muxtape userbase at being less than 100,000. The site was supported by links to Amazon.com. It had a very simple design and could not be searched within the site. Ouellette explains that the important part of a mixtape, which he tried to preserve on his site, is about discovering new music instead of someone finding music they are already familiar with.

On August 18th, 2008, Muxtape services ceased to be available, and the main page displayed the following message: “Muxtape will be unavailable for a brief period while we sort out a problem with the RIAA.

I wasn’t registered with the site, but I did find a lot of good music. I found the site through my favorite independent label, QN5 Music. They had their own muxtape to introduce themselves to those with open ears.

Anywho Justin and his friends are revamping the site, albeit it’s going to be strictly bands. Damn you music industry- you’re digging you’re own grave.

Asobi Seksu is a band the pulled me in about two months ago.  I was walk through the cd aisles and their album art for their sophomore release “Citrus” caught my eye.  So I bought it and upon listening, I was blown away.  It’s shoegazzing. and it’s back in full force.  And happy this time.  Asobi Sesksu is a band that has a special place in my heart and in yours too if you choose the wiser of two options and go buy her cd.

I just want to announce that she will be performing live October 27th @ Necter Lounge around eight oclock.

There is also the Lykke LI show on October 29th @ Neumo’s

Once we get these calendar things working we can make it easier to keep you up to date.

So let’s catch up shall we.

The last three weekends were full of activity for myself.  On the 23rd, Dru and I got to catch the Janaelle Monea show at Nectar Lounge with very much thanks to Dorian for making it all possible.  (Check out his blog “The Audacity of Dope” for some of the newest and most prevailent Hip-Hop news around.  The show was amazing.  That girl can put on a performance like none other.  She was running at 100% the entire time she is on stage.  She pulls the crowd in, get you involved and makes it a personal show, and that’s hard to do in Seattle.  The whole band had a great dynamic not only with their performances but with maintaining the crowds involvement level.  If Janelle need a break, the guitarist and drummer would rock out with their own interlude.  Very well done performance.  I was in it to begin with 100%

On the 30th, I caught Bumbershoot which was a good year for me.  I was able to see all the bands I really wanted to see and they were on small stages which was nice.  I started with Neko Case who was great but her sounds doesn’t stray too much from what you get on a store bought album.  Beautiful voice and great music but not enough of a difference to make me want to go out for it again.  Thao with the Get Down Stay Down, were a blast.  Very nice whimsical tone to the event mixed in with Thao’s drunken debauchery to make it that much more enjoyable.  She brought her flavor and funk in a pint glass.  The performace was on point, getting the whole crowd to clap in with them, which again is tough to do in Seattle.  It was a very fun show to catch coming out of my mediocre show of Neko.  Next was Estelle, who was just boring.  Bitch would not stop talking.  Yeah okay we will have fun; but then again we will be careful.  Okay we get it lady.  Have funbut be careful.  I know they tell you were are all dumb over here in the states but we aren’t retarded 8 year olds.  Once is enough hun.  I love your music but your yamma becomes a bit much.  Then we had Saul Williams who put on a great lively show getting everyone in on it.  Even thoughs who were just passing by.  You heard them walking into the crowd asking who he was.  He had great stage pressance and did his job well.  Beck was very entertaining, mixing and matching the perfect setlist for the crowd he was playing to.  He also had the most enetertaining light show I think you can get at a Bumbershoot show.  All in all very good.

On the 6th Dru and I caught Rock the Bells, thanks again Dorrian.  All the performaces were pretty much what I was expecting.  Jedi got up there and got the job done, Little Brother worked the crowd and had some fun, Murs had his fun with the audience, Blue Scholars lead the crowd as usual very well and did their Seattle thing, Mos Def yelled over a James Brown track for about 50 minutes, NAS, The Pharcyde, and Tribe were all on point and put on a very good show.  You can tell that these guys know what they are doing by now.  It has been a very enjoyable series of weekends so I retired for this weekend.

But what I am here to say is you should all check out a CD called “Youth Novels” by Lykke Li.  She is a female vocalist from Denmark who has an amazing voive that can range from floaty and playful to heavy and mysterious.  Very lo-fi in the music but focused on the vocals.  She has a show at Neumo’s Oct.29th.  I know I will be attending and I do believe yall should too.  I am going to be posting a couple of things up onto the calender There are also Black Kids, Mission to Burma, Notwist, and Silver Jews shows coming up as well that I am going to try and make it out to.

Why would I have to explain this when RemixMag.com already has? From their site:

Dozens of producers will have the opportunity to submit their own original pieces of music for a chance to compete in a unique, head-to-head battle of the beats called Red Bull Big Tune. Started in Seattle in 2005 as a partnership between event producers Vitamin D and Jonathan Moore, Big Tune was created as a way to showcase the musical talents of emerging and established producers in a fresh and forward thinking way. The spirit of the Jamaican Reggae/Dancehall culture, where battles such as this occurred nightly and were commonly referred to as “clashes,” is the inspiration behind Big Tune.

During each stop, 10-12 feature producers will be chosen from the pool of applicants to come to the select Big Tune venue and “clash” head-to-head through rounds of single elimination competition. What makes Big Tune truly unique is the integral role the crowd plays in determining who advances and who goes home. Only the producers that elicit the largest response from the audience will make it to the next round. Participants will need to save the best beats for last as they advance to the final clash where the two best producers from the night will go head-to-head. The last person standing will be the one with The Big Tune. The top two producers from each of the 5 stops plus two wild cards will be flown to Los Angeles on October 18th to compete in the Red Bull Big Tune national final and receive the ultimate bragging rights.

The competition will again be at Neumo’s in Cap Hill on Pike. Last year Sabzi of Blue Scholars/Common Market won both Seattle and Nationals. We had De La Soul and Just Blaze as the special guests. This year we’re having producer/mc Black Milk and one of the top 5 doa mc’s (imo) Slum Village’s Elzhi. RSVP on the official page. If you appreciate music, be there!

can you name all of these producers?
